Comparative Performance Section

When comparing the Callaway Apex AI 200 and AI 300 irons, it’s clear they cater to slightly different golfers, despite having near-identical ball speeds (119.8 mph vs 119.9 mph) and carry distances (169 yards vs 170 yards).

Looks

Callaway Apex AI 300 irons behind

The Apex AI 200 has a more compact, sleeker look, which appeals to players who prefer a traditional, less bulky iron. Meanwhile, the AI 300 is larger and has more offset, offering more confidence for those who want a bit more forgiveness at address.

Forgiveness

The AI 300 edges ahead in forgiveness, with a smaller ball speed drop-off of just 3.5 mph on mishits compared to the AI 200’s 6 mph. That equates to 5-6 yards extra loss on carry distance for a poor strike. This makes the 300 better suited for mid-to-high handicappers who need a bit more help on off-centre strikes.

Distance

Both irons perform similarly in terms of distance, with only a slight edge to the AI 300 due to its lower launch angle (16.9°) and slightly lower spin rate (5,679 rpm). The AI 200, with its higher launch (17.4°) and more consistent spin, offers a bit more control over the ball flight, though the 300 may provide a touch more roll-out on longer shots.

Please note, both iron’s launch angles and spin rates can be tweaked when you go for custom fitting by testing out different shaft combinations.

Feel

The AI 200 delivers a more solid, controlled feel through the hands, appealing to players who want feedback from their strikes. The AI 300, by contrast, feels more forgiving and gives less feedback on strike, particularly on miss hits.

Control

The Apex AI 200 shines in terms of control, especially for players who can find the center of the clubface regularly. Its spin consistency helps with shot shaping and stopping power. Although we wouldn’t say it excels compared to all player-distance irons on the market.

The AI 300, while still offering good control, has a bit more variance in spin rates, making it slightly less precise, but more forgiving for those who miss the centre.

Summary

In short, the AI 200 is better for confident ball-strikers who want control, while the AI 300 is perfect for golfers seeking extra forgiveness without sacrificing much in terms of distance or feel.

We were surprised with how little difference there was between these irons when it comes to ball speed and carry distance. So the deciding factor here is forgiveness.
