How this calculator works
This tool uses the same mathematical principles that underpin modern handicap systems worldwide. Enter your score, your course's difficulty rating and challenge index, and we calculate your performance differential — the number that tells you how well you played relative to the course.
The playing conditions factor accounts for wind, firm greens, and wet fairways, which all affect how a score translates into ability. The formula is: (Score − Course Difficulty Rating) × (113 ÷ Challenge Index) ± Conditions.
What your handicap means
A handicap index is a portable measure of your potential — the score you're capable of on a good day, relative to any course. As a rough guide: scratch (0) is a very strong amateur. Single figures (1–9) is a skilled club golfer. A handicap of 10–20 covers the majority of regular golfers. Above 20 is a newer or casual player still building consistency. This tool gives you a single-round estimate — official handicaps use multiple rounds for a more accurate picture.
Common handicap questions
How is a golf handicap calculated?
A handicap is calculated from your score differential — how well you played compared to the course's difficulty. The formula accounts for the course rating (expected score for a scratch golfer) and the slope rating (how much harder the course is for an average player vs a scratch golfer). The standard slope for an average course is 113.
What is a good golf handicap?
Most male club golfers play off somewhere between 10 and 24, females 12 to 36. A single-figure handicap puts you in roughly the top 20% of regular golfers. The average male golfer in the UK plays off around 16–18, and the average female golfer around 26–28.
Where do I find my course rating and slope?
Both figures are printed on your scorecard. The course rating is typically very close to par (e.g. 72.4 for a par 72). The slope sits between 55 and 155 — most courses are between 105 and 130. If you can't find them, check the club website or ask in the pro shop.
Is this the same as an official handicap?
No. It is similar, but the official calculation is trademarked by the R&A and USPGA. This calculator takes in an additional factor of 'playing conditions' so we can offer a quick, simple way for golfers to estimate their handicap who are yet to gain an official handicap.
The official system uses multiple rounds (typically your best 8 from your last 20). This calculator gives you a single-round estimate using the same mathematics — a great starting point if you don't yet have an official handicap. To get an official one, register through your national golf association.
