How We Test Products

Golf equipment is expensive, and often the technical terms and marketing used to sell golf clubs can make it difficult to know what options are best for you. Our aim at Golf Insider is to test, compare and share with you to make sure you get the best gear to have fun on the golf course and help you lower your scores.

Our goals with testing and reviews

Our goal is to help find the best equipment to shoot lower scores, practice and play to the best of your ability and make golf more fun!

Our core principles

When we create any product review or buying guide we aim to provide great reviews underpinned by the following values:

  • Expertise – All our testers and writers are golf professionals with 8+ years in playing, coaching and club fitting. Our team also has a strong expertise in biomechanics and sports performance.
  • Insightful – We aim to cut through the fancy marketing terms and explain the how and the why behind new technology. We’ll explain key terms, help you select the best options for you and tell you when we think technology isn’t worth it.
  • Innovative – Where possible we use data and novel approaches to test products. This includes accuracy testing for laser rangefinders and side-by-side testing of launch monitors to search for any errors that otherwise users wouldn’t know about.

How we test products

When products arrive we take some photos of the packaging and equipment and then get testing! Sorry, no fancy unboxing ceremonies here. We use products in practice and play and where possible collect data so we can provide the most accurate ratings we can.

Sometimes we can get a product tested in a few days, other times it takes us a few weeks and failed data collection attempts. We only publish our reviews when we are 100% happy with our process and results.

Transparent testing & rankings

We are sent some products for free to test, but never accept money for reviewing products or for ranking products (you’d be amazed at a couple of the emails we received in the past…). We place our integrity as golfers and a global golf brand above all else when creating our reviews and ranking products for you.

Despite getting some products sent to us, we still spend hundreds (sometimes thousands) a month on equipment testing. The Golf Insider team (thanks team) needs to be paid too! Golf products are either returned, given to local good causes or given away to readers when we’re allowed to.

To help us create the best content and remain unbiased we do use display ads via MediaVine to help run Golf Insider. Nobody loves ads, but it means we can create great content and not be reliant on pleasing any one brand.

Affiliate links

We also have affiliate partnerships with some of the largest global golf retailers. Again, we select these based on our experiences, customer feedback, pricing and their ability to supply products to golfers around the world.

Some of the links to golf retailers on our sites are affiliate links. When you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, you are the same price, but we may receive a small commission for the sale. This again helps us fund the work we do and create cool resources for you as golfers.

Where possible, we work with our retailers to negotiate Golf Insider readers extra discounts. As we grow, we’ll continue to try to find special discounts just for you.
