A $200 launch monitor sounds too good to be true. Surely it can’t be accurate? So we tested it against a $18,000+ GC Hawk and compared every reading to work out how will it performs. Here’s exactly how accurate it is, where it slips up, and who should buy one.

Below are the testing results for the Shot Scope LM1 vs GC Hawk. Use the buttons to toggle between the different variables they measure.

Same shots, both units, recorded at the same time. Each row is one shot — the closer the two dots, the closer the LM1 got to the £15,000 GC Hawk.

This is the number the radar measures directly, and it shows. On the wedge and 7-iron, every reading sat within 0.5 mph of the GC Hawk. The driver runs around 3 mph high, but it does it on every shot — a consistent offset rather than random error.

Bang on with the 7-iron and steady with the driver (about 2 mph high). The wedge is where it struggles: the readings bounce around because a shorter, steeper swing is hard for a unit sitting behind the ball to read.

On a decent strike it is genuinely impressive — two of the three drivers landed within a yard of the GC Hawk. The odd one out is shot one, a low heel strike: the LM1 read it 24 yards long because it cannot see that the ball came off low and short. We get into why just below.

Smash factor is ball speed divided by club speed, so it inherits both. With the 7-iron and driver it is reliable. On the wedge it wobbles — but that is the club speed reading throwing it off, not the ball speed.

How we tested the LM1's accuracy

We tested the LM1 in about the hardest conditions you can give a radar. Indoors, it sat 1.4m behind the ball, exactly as Shot Scope recommends, with the screen just 2.9m in front — so the unit had under three metres of ball flight to read before the ball vanished into the screen. Radar gets more accurate the more flight it can track, so these numbers are a floor, not a ceiling in terms of performance.

How accurate is the Shot Scope LM1?

Ball speed — is excellent. It's the metric the radar measures directly (I'd hypothesise), and across the wedge and 7-iron every reading landed within half a mile per hour of the GC Hawk. With the driver it read about 3 mph high on all three shots. Not bad, and a consistent offset is far more useful than random scatter.

Club speed is more mixed. With the 7-iron it was almost perfect — inside 0.7 mph every time. The driver again ran a little high (around 2 mph), but consistently. The wedge is the weak spot: across three pitching wedges the LM1 read 74, 81 and 85 mph, where the GCHawk saw a tight 78–81 band. Tracking club speed on short, steep swings is harder for a unit sitting behind the ball. Or it may estimate it from ball speed data (that's one for Shot Scope to keep secret).

Carry distance is excellent on well-struck shots. The exception was the low-heel driver, which read 24 yards long. That one shot gives a good insight into how this launch monitor works, which is the next section.

Smash factor is just a calculation of ball speed divided by club speed. With the 7-iron and driver it's reliable. On the wedge, it wanders, because it was a little off with measuring club head speed.

We've left total distance out on purpose. The LM1 and GC Hawk both estimate roll-out on conditions the pre-determine, so any difference isn't an error, but a difference in pre-set conditions.

Why the LM1 gets fooled by a mishit

The LM1 directly measures: ball speed and/or club speed. It does not measure launch angle or spin — it estimates them from which club you select, then uses those estimates to model the ball flight and hand you a carry number.

On a well-struck shot, that works really well (super modelling Shot Scope), because a decent strike launches and spins roughly the way the model expects. Feed it a strike that flies differently, though, and the real ball flight drifts away from what the model predicts.

That's exactly what happened with our low-heel driver. The Hawk measured it launching at 7 degrees with low spin — a low, hard-running miss that carried just 228 yards. The LM1, blind to that low launch, assumed a normal driver flight and reported 252. The LM1 simply can't see the information – however for $199 we can't be too upset...

The key takeaway: trust the carry-on shots you've struck well, and take it with a pinch of salt on the ones you haven't. After the main testing I tried a whole host of mishit irons and they actually held up far better — a thinned 7-iron was only a couple of yards out.

Who should buy a LM1?

Now we know how accurate it is, we can share some useful insights into who should buy an LM1?

It reads consistently, just a touch high, so real speed gains show up clearly. Ignore the couple of mph offset and watch your own trend.
!It's not as accurate as a £15k+ launch monitor, so compare against your own last session, not a friend's TrackMan number.

Carry is reference-grade on good strikes, so the gaps you build from your solid swings hold up.
!Gap off your good shots — a thin or heeled one can read long.

Ball speed and carry pop up straight away, which makes a session genuinely competitive and engaging.

Smash and ball speed are dependable on irons and driver, so you can spot a good striking day from a scratchy one.
!Wedge club speed was noisy in our testing, so smash on short clubs might be less trustworthy.

Indoor & small-space practice

Good fit

Hitting into a net in a garage or basement and still getting real numbers, with no phone to set up.

It runs off its own screen and in our testing it gave really impressive carry numbers with under three metres of ball flight.
!It still estimates flight, so the mishit caveat applies — trust the well-struck numbers most.

I personally bought one for speed training, I was using the SLX Hybrid mini which is accurate for club head speed, but it was such a faff to use.

Using it with or without your phone

There's a great app for this! I tried it out on a few sessions. The app adds session history if you want it, but my enjoyment of this launch monitor is that it is so quick and easy to set up and use without a phone. And the display gives you clear, near-instant numbers after every shot.

Setup, screen and battery

Set it 1.4m behind the ball, switch on, hit. The screen is bright enough to read indoors and out. It's not quite pocket-sized but small enough to carry in your golf bag, IPX3 water-resistant, and good for around five hours of charge. It charges quickly too and seems to hold its charge very well if you don't use it for a few weeks. I'll report back in a few more months if I have any updates here.

How the LM1 compares

LM1 vs TrackMan and GC Hawk

Different league, different cost. TrackMan and GC Hawk measures club and ball seperately and directly measure launch and spin directly and cost $,000+. The LM1 measures ball speed well, it may measure or estimate club head speed and then models other variables.

LM1 vs the PRGR

The closest budget rival, at a similar price. The LM1 adds a colour screen, more on-screen data, app syncing and a better-built package. The Shot Scope LM1 also just feels more fun to use! However, the PRGR also has really strong levels of accuracy for ball speed, club speed and carry.

LM1 vs the SLX Hybrid mini

The SLX mini isn't as accurate as the Shot Scope LM1 for tracking ball speed or club head speed. The SLX mini actually got more accruate as we moved from PW to driver in our testing (maybe thats how they modelled the data) but still showed more error accross the board compared to the LM1. The SLX Mini is also more of a faff to setup and I've found the battery dies if you don't use it for a week or two.

Is the Shot Scope LM1 worth it?

For me, it's a yes. I think I'll only be using it for speed training. Maybe I'll also use it to add more fun to range session with carry distance, but the range balls won't reflect my actual carry distances (nothing to do with the LM1).

At $199.99 / £199 with no subscription. You get an excellent measure of ball and club speed, and reference-grade carry on good strikes. It won't fit clubs, read your lateral misses, but for the price its very useful.

Great for speed training, club gapping and adding more fun to training in a net at home. Look elsewhere if you need spin, launch or lateral error data.
